This week in our series titled “Live Free or Die”, Pastor Phil covered Galatians 5. He began by reminding us about some of the things that Christ has freed us from and backed them up with some scripture, including: Condemnation (Romans 8), the Power of Sin (Romans 6), the Fear of Death (Hebrews 2), and the Need to Act Selfishly (2 Peter 1).
In Galatians 5, Paul draws distinct lines between being somebody committed to the law versus being committed to Jesus. Being under the Law requires a perfection that we cannot attain, while following Jesus grants a freedom full of grace. Paul warns us, though, that with that freedom comes another kind of temptation and the very easy opportunity to fall back into being a slave to sin, so we must be on our guard and instead of using our freedom to serve ourselves, we must use that freedom to serve others. Verse 14: “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
