Criticism Turns to Acceptance-Acts 11

Ears To Hear

Acts 11 On the heels of Peter meeting with a group of Gentiles in Joppa and the Holy Spirit falling upon them, Peter is confronted by the group of believers back in Jerusalem about these events. Peter recounts what happened and he concludes his summary with this incredible statement: “Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” These believers have a significant response in verse 18: “When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, ‘Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.’” With these Gentiles entering God’s community, Peter and these believers both have the awareness to see that God is clearly accomplishing something in their midst, something counter to what they have believed their entire lives. Pastor Phil stated, “One of the ways God speaks to us is indirectly through each other and the growth that others have.” Peter and the believers were willing to let their entire worldview change based on God’s work in the life of the Gentiles. May we be so inclined to let God’s truth overwhelm us enough to redirect towards Him everything we know and believe.
